Maatakitj sings in Nyoongar—joyfully defiant Indigenous language activism you can dance to.
-
Nyoongar songmaker Maatakitj(skinny legs like spears) sounds like nowhere else. Dusky guitars and dance fuse with the Indigenous song traditions of Western Australia's deep south, carried as public service announcements for Country. He sings in Nyoongar, one of the many endangered Indigenous languages of Australia.
Maatakitj performed at World Expo Osaka 2025, toured Australia with Angélique Kidjo in 2024, composed for the Kronos Quartet in 2023, and made the groundbreaking dance album Noongar Wonderland ft. Paul Mac in 2022. As Clint Bracknell, he is Professor of Music at UWA.
2026 brings a run of new Nyoongar tracks. July single KARKAINY debuted at #11 on the Australian Community Radio National Airplay Chart, with airplay across RTRfm, PBS, Triple R and a spot on Spotify's Big Ancestor Energy. August single DJIRIDJI debuted at #7 on the Australian Community Radio National Airplay Chart, returned to Big Ancestor Energy and featured on Triple j — with more still to come.
